*.xls saved win 95 can't be opened in win 98

I used Execl (office 97) with win95 and my file was saved with password. When installing win 98 I can't access to my excel file because "it was saved with deciphering method using language of country different to that in use, ask for non protected file". I tried to change the country language without success !
Any help !

Can you use the machine that originially saved the files and resave them without passwords?

Impossible, all was replaced by the new version.
It's hard for me to think my work is unreclaimable !!
