Does anyone have a good technique for projecting text on a
cylinder? I've done the usual Edit>Project, but the results
are not adequate because it still distorts the text
proportions the further away from tangency the text curves.
I need something that is accurate as I am going to use the
text to laser mark some cylindrical parts.

did you try wrap ? (cant see your pic)

wrap maintains the original length of the object that was
wrapped. But you can only do it on "ruled" surfaces.
"ruled" surfaces are flat in at least 1 direction
(extrudes, cones, cylinders all meet this criteria) You
can imagine any other surface it would require a decal or
sticker to stretch to lay "flat" on that surface

instead of wrap try "project"

Wrap is pretty easy especially on a cylinder. The part that everyone seems to forget is to add a Coordinate while in a sketch (see 1:00 in video below).

After that wraps are very easy. You are limited to ruled surfaces as csusie mentioned above (extrudes, revolves).
