Hello all,

I'm after find out what the section modulus of x2 100x100x5 square hollow box sections positioned parallel to each other 600mm apart would be...
the section modulus for 1 box section is 55.9cm^3. Would it be as simple and doubling this to 111.8cm^3 ?

the two section will have bearers positioned cross them at intervals to tie them together. I need to know the section modulus so I can do a loading calc on the two box sections.

any help would me much appreciated.

According to my steel handbook, the section modulus S for one HSS102x102x4.8 is 54.2*103 mm3. In Canada, HSS100x100x5 members are not standard, so check the value in your location.

If a gravity load lies precisely half way between two HSS members attached by horizontal members , each will carry half the load. If the load is off center, one will carry more than the other.

Your question seems rather elementary for this forum.

Mike, I don't think he is talking about a transformed section. The two HSS members are side by side, separated by 600 mm unless I didn't understand the question.
