WinZip 1

Quick question. Will WinZip open .tar format files. I have a connecter I downloaded from the Tyco website (58140.tar.gz) and can't open it. It's suppose to be a STEP file and it's archieve in a .tar format. We're currently using the standard windows zip progam.

Yes. I use WinZip for all files I download from Tyco.

It doesn't work with all compressed file formats, but try just dropping the zipped file directly into the SolidWorks graphics area (no document open) or an unused toolbar area.

Doesn't seem to work on both tests i did.

We're leaning towards a program called WinRAR. It's cheap, no maintenance cost, and free updates.

You can add additional compression formats to winzip as long as you have the .exe files of those other formats. This of course means you will need to download the other programs, but you can run them from within winzip once you've got it set up.

I have opened a Gzipped tar file with Winzip. It took two steps. I used Winzip to UnGzip it. I loaded the uncompressed tar file separately into Winzip, and it unpacked fine. Winzip cannot (or could not) uncompress all in one step. I have not done this lately.

A tar file has the extension .tar.

A gnuzipped tar file has either of two extensions, .tar.gz, or .tgz.

I own WinZip and use it for most applications. However, I also use 7-Zip for things it won't handle and for .rar and .tar stuff:
