Windshield design for outdoor equipment

Hi all guys,

I have a problem with the thermal design of a waste heat boiler. The equipment will be installed outdoor and the difference between the winter (-25ºC or -13ºF) and summer (40ºC or 104ºF) temperature is a great problem. My colleagues and me, we are together thinking about something that will protect our waste heat boiler from the wind and rain in order to keep a right temperature profile in the equipment. Then we have thought about designing a rainshield or windshield for the equipment but we don't know how to size it.

Could anybody help us on designing it?

If you're willing to build a large windshield, would it not be worth considering adding the additional cost and putting up a small building?

I worked on a unit outdoors in the northern USA. Every other system I have ever done was inside, and the problems we encountered by moving the unit outside was more than I could have ever imagined. The problems we faced on that job were never ending and I would recommend anyone considering putting a system outside to reconsider that choice.

I am sure there are good reasons as to why some people have to move their systems outside (size, etc), but unless you have no choice, I strongly recommend keeping your system indoors.

We are seeking how to build a wind/rainshield because our equipment is a waste heat boiler. As you can consider, it's no use to put up a bulding. In winter we'd have no problems but in summer, there would be any refrigeration of the system and we should think about placing an HVAC system and this has to be avoided. That's why we are looking for a windshield solution.

Macmet, do you know how to design it?

Sorry, I don't know how.

I just worked on relatively small solid fuel boiler systems (<100kpph).

If you are green enough to recover waste heat in a boiler you have to be green enough to cover it with a building. It can be a cheap building.

I don't know of any boiler that is rated to run outside: controls, motors, safety devices, fuel and etc. will be a problem.

I mistook the equipment. It's a steam superheater, it's true it must be installed outdoor and probably alone, only connected by piping (inlets, outlets). If you can, please, visit this addresse and you will understand what I mean.

As you can see it's only a metal thin sheet or plate. But the problem is the airgap I have to leave between it and the shell.

Put a cover (sheet metal biulding) over the controls and instruments.

Just got through trying to maintain an outdoor unit in mid-October/early November in northern NH. The equipment suffered, instruments suffered, and quality was hard to maintain. And that was before the snow and ice struck! We just faced winds and rain and hail.

How big a building are we talking about??

I have designed rather small buildings - in the 20' x 20' range that:

1. Could be unbolted and lifted off or
2. Rolled away or
3. Broke down into 5 or 6 major pieces and carried away.

Just a thought??

Pretty easy, cheap and solved the user's problems.

Our customer doesn't think about any building, thus. the equipment is located outdoor due to general specifications.

If you don't know how to design a windshield, it's ok, but not try to change the real meaning thread.
