Let look at a rectangular building that is 40ft in width and 100ft in length. The calculated end zone length/width (2a) is 8ft.
In order to come up with base shear, I have been calculating interior zone length by subtracting the width or length of building by (2) end zones length (2x2a). Therefore, for 40ftx100ft building, the interior zone lengths will be 24ft and 84ft for the 40ft & 100ft wall/roof respectively.
ASCE7-05 Figure 6-2 seems to suggest that the interior width/length equal the width/length minus (1) end zone width/length.
Please let me know if my calculation is okay or not.
Thank you,
HDN.
