I need to filter wind conditions that make a runway unusable. I have the direction and speed, however I need to calculate how much of this is a tailwind, headwind & crosswind for a particular runway. If anyone knows of a formula or software that can do this for me please let me know.

Thank You!!!

Log onto Sporty's Pilot Shop and pick up the very "high-tech" E6-B computer. It's not really a computer, but more of a pilot's slide rule that can calculate wind direction.

Thank you for the info on the E6B computer, however I have a database of 241,000 records that I need to analyze. I really need the formula that breaks a wind up into its crosswind and tail/headwind components. Thanks again!!

Why wouldn't this be a simple case of vector components?? If theta is the angle between the runway and the wind direction, the wind component along the runway is (wind speed)*cos(theta) and the cross wind component is (wind speed)*sin(theta)...

Remember the actual runway heading may differ from its number designation.
