can someone refer me to a guide how to check the weld of WF steel column to base plate. i am checking a calculation seem straight forward but he has corner stress ft, etc..

When checking welds I usually Blodgett where he has equations that treat welds as lines. I then use mechanics of materials to combine the principal stresses (shear stress, tension stress etc) and then size the weld accordingly.

thanks, i am not so familiar with lrfd and all these phi factors confuse me.

the allowabe ASD for Fw is 0.3 (70) x 0.707

if i were to compare this with actual lrfd loads/stress.

what should be the Fw formula including lrfd phi factor

nevermind i got it

phi x 0.6 x 70 x .707

thanks,

For the strength of a fillet weld look on page 8-8 of the AISC 13th edition (if applicable). The table at the bottom of the page gives a simple formula for both ASD and LRFD.

I prefer to use SteelPE's approach and get the weld "stresses" in k/in, not ksi. From there it's an easy comparison to 1.392 k/in/1/16" of fillet weld.
