1. Publish helps when the pointed document(s) is revised/renamed/replaced by syncing the old links with the new ones. (a big time-saver!)
2. Publish identifies which geometry in the pointed document is intended to be shared.
3. With the proper tools setting, publish limits ext references in the child document to only the geometry intended to be shared.
