Why did CE shield their oil guns inside horns on corner fired units?

CE used horns (on the tangential or corner fired units) that had the oil guns recessed back inside the horn with an optional auxilary gun on top... can anyone think of a reason why running one main gun inside the horn that came out into the furnace maybe 1/2" would not work?

Would the velocities of combustion air from the horn at 50+ mph plus the velocities of the coal registers at 50+ mph coming in tangent to the oil flame be just to much?

Just figured there was a reason why CE decided to shield the flame back inside the horn....

If you blast that oil flame too hard and too soon before it has a chance to develop into a nice cone necessary for complete combustion, you can quench the flame and you will produce a lot of LOI. Push it too far off of the tip, too, and you can have flame outs.
