For those of you who provide schedules for footings and foundation walls. In which schedule do you specify the vertical dowels? These are usually governed by the wall design, but obviously the footings get poured first so the dowel information seems more critical while they are building the footings.

The same question would apply to a pad footing with a pedestal. I always specify those vertical dowels in a pedestal schedule.

I typically specify the dowels in my details which are referenced from my wall/pier schedules. I usually do the "size and spacing to match" thing. I can see how specifying the dowels in the footing schedules would be contractor friendly however:

1) I wouldn't relish a situation where I might have two schedule listings for identical foundation elements where the only difference was the dowels.

2) I feel that listing the dowels with the foundations would be less "me" friendly and, perhaps, a bit more error prone which would, of course, be "no one" friendly.

3) While I generally do consider it important to make my drawings builder friendly, there are limits to that. My fees reflect a high degree of document production efficiency on my end.

4) I've no desire for my drawings to be a complex puzzle in need of solving but I do expect a bit of effort and skill to be brought to bear by those reading my drawings.

5) In the age of BIM, it may well be that this could be done automatically, entirely eliminating my concerns for efficiency and accuracy in drawing production.

Show on the same drawing where you have the doweling detail shown.
