Hi all,

I work for an R&D department based out of California, and I'm looking to have prototypes of our screw designs made faster. Currently, we send our designs to Taiwan, and it takes 3 months until we receive the finished product. We are mainly looking at making self tapping screws for building siding, similar to this Hilti Product ( The problem is, if these screws don't work we have to wait another 3 months to tweak one small parameter and it's just turns into a huge mess. I'm wondering, is there any places domestically that we can send our designs to and they can send back finished samples much quicker than this 3 month window. I know when I send sketches to the local machine shop for fixtures, he sends me back a finished product in two weeks. Is there something similiar to this, but for thread rolling? Money is not a limiting issue here...

if it can be built it can be calculated.

This is a non-trivial problem. Construction fasteners such as this are almost exclusively manufactured in Taiwan. The only domestic manufacturers that I can think of are going to be your competitors (SFS intec, Elco/Infastech, etc.). I would try some smaller manufacturers of fasteners or shops that specialize in thread rolling. These tapered screws require flat die rolling instead of cylindrical die rolling, which further complicates the matter, because most providers of thread rolling services use the latter. Here are two places that may be willing to work with you on a prototype basis:

Rives Manufacturing

Tru-Thread Co., Inc.

there are lots of screw machine shops in the USA. I worked at one.
