Hey Everyone,

I've had my job now for just under 2 years. As much as the compnay has been great to me (small businesses are the best for young people), I've been craving something more than just being a CAD junky. I still want to work with CAD programs (especially Pro/E and AutoCAD), i guess i am a cad junky, either way.

But im starting to become interested in surverying, and soil testing and the such..., i was wondering what i would need to expect in order to move past being "the kid in the corner who does my prints and models."

Im seasoned with excel, autoCAD, and familiar with Access. What else would i need to be an asset to any potential company. What duties come with what field and what not. I guess a basic run down really.

Thanks in advanced,

~~JM

I guess my starting point would be to think about how you can inject some more initiative into your work.

If you can see something about the way drawings are produced, modified or something that isnt quite right and you think you can fix it. Suggest it to the boss, make a documented proposal or something.

I know thats very general but im not really sure of what sort of work you want to get involved in.

Good Luck!
Andrew

Surveying and soil testing sound more like Civil than Mechanical (I'm assuming your Mechanical). I think you should take some classes on these topics so that you have the background. Or, your company can send you out for training for these topoics. Just having computer skills will not cut it if you don't know the subject.
