Hello, first time posting. I am going down a rabbit hole and would like some help! I know that torsional only stress would use shear strength to calculate S.F. Would you use tensile or shear strength for bending only? What about Von Misses stress when torsion and bending is involved? What about Von Misses when torsion, bending and normal stress is involved? I just need someone to set me straight. Thanks for any help you can give!

What exactly are you designing?
In a lot of areas, the general methods of calculating stress as well as SF and what they are applied to, are codified in various ways- for example, in structural steel, in tank and vessel work, lifting applications, etc.
