Does anyone have a "rule of thumb" to determine under what general conditions to use metallic gaskets and alloy studs?

Sheet type gaskets are generally a function of pressure x temperature and you should consult your local supplier for that data. Metallic gaskets are generally used elsewhere although a lot of users standardize on say spiral wound for everything. Acceptable studs for a particular gasket are given in B16.5/47.
