I am working with an oil and gas operator in Texas and I keep hearing the term "wedge" come up referencing something about fluid flow. Can somebody enlighten me what they mean when they are talking about "the wedge."?

Wedge flow meter element.

The sloped angle of the wedge allows it to pass debris because there's a vector force down the wedge to the orifice that doesn't exist in a classic flat faced orifice disk more commonly used for the same task. The wedge is self cleaning.

Flow wedges are hardly a quadrant edged orifice plate. There are more like a venturi tube of sorts than a plate of any kind.

Flow wedges are commonly used where other meters are totoally unsuited, especially in steam jacketed piping.
