what is the best way to get a good avi ?

I have some scenes(animations) in an assembly. I need to render them and put together to a file(avi,mpeg,mov). Do you have any tips about this process. Is it useful to get all frames to pics (frm001.bmp frm002.bmp.....)and then compress them in win. movie maker. (i think moviemaker does)..Or any other tips about this process...
