what is "E.C. HOLT'S RESEARCH and U-FRAME"?

I never seen this before. so please help...

I was reviewing the Ped. steel truss bridge. I see that Truss members for top and bottom chords were designed by what is called "E.C. HOLT'S RESEARCH and U-FRAME"?

Can anyone explain me about its method, why, how it works for the truss chords?

Also where can i find more information about its method in web?

Why we can't use assumed K value here instead of using complicated method?

Hi yjung,

A u-frame is utilized when one has a through truss bridge, that is, the top chord has no lateral bracing or sway frames. The rigidity of a floorbeam to vertical member is utilized to elastically laterally support the top chord.

For further reference check Timoshenko's "Theory of Elastic Stability" and BS5400.

BS5400 stands for British Standard and 5400 for the design of bridges.

No web sites that I know of.

Check a library for the references, it should be easy to follow as I have explained a little about it.
