I have recently been doing more traffic signal design and I would like to have some sort of design background other than the PENNDOT publications which are vague at best. All of my knowledge has kind of come "on the fly". While it is good and useful knowledge, I would like to solidify my background knowldege with some sort of publication that I can reference.

I know ITE has a signal design book is it any good?

thanks in advance.

The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD)is approved by the Federal Highway Administrator
as the National Standard. Part 4 is Traffic Signals.

The MUTCD has little info on what goes on inside the signal.

I suspect he's looking for more of a care and feeding manual

ITE's Manual of Traffic Signal Design and ITE's Traffic Engg Handbook Chapter 13.

This just goes to show that it is a good idea to be specific when requesting information.

Is the "signal design" about placement of the mechanics? Is it about the electronics inside? Is it about timing design? Is it about signal coordination with other intersections?

I can suspect it to be something other than above too...I just figured I'd throw out something basic and see if we got more info :)
