What happens if beam depth is larger than 1/4 of clear span?

Hello respected engineers, i have two questions:

As per ACI 318 - 21.5.1.2. the clear span of a beam must be at least four times its effective depth. What would be the implications or consequences if clear span is to be made shorter than 4 times the effective depth?


Also, beams are allowed to be wider than the supporting columns as noted in ACI 318 - 21.5.1.4. That goes to say that also applies to the depth of the beam right?

This is SMF beam requirement .. If (ln/h)< 4, it will not be SMF . Pls also look deep beams..


This is another SMF beam requirement ..

21.5.1.4 — Width of member, bw, shall not exceed width of supporting member, c2, plus a distance on each side of supporting member equal to the smaller of (a) and (b):
(a) Width of supporting member, c2, and
(b) 0.75 times the overall dimension of supporting
member, c1.

This is upper limit for the beam width for SMF ..
