I know "w" of ASTM A709 Grade 50w steel stands for weathering.
But I failed to find what "s" of ASTM A709 Grade 50s steel stands for.

"Structural". It is the same (modulo CVN toughness requirements) as ASTM A 992, "Structural Steel Shapes".

I also like to think "Seismic". It has a cap on yield strength and on yield/tensile ratio so you can rely on it for "strong column weak beam" design.
