Hi
Sorry for such a base question I am about to ask.
Actually this does not involve work but my own personal life. But the info I gain I could take back to work with me.
I wish to know what is good water to drink. Out of bottles.
Is distilled the best for human consumption
Is reverse osmosis the best for human consumption
Is spring water the best for human consuption?

Thanks

civilperson,

Your statement is correct, if tooth enamel is exposed to a continuous rinse with distilled water over a period of years. In this application, however, distilled water is only contacting enamel for a matter of seconds before being replaced with saliva.

Here is a link to information published by a trusted source, the Water Quality Association.

It was interesting for me to note that only distilled water is consumed by personnel on U. S. Naval submarines. The Navy has studied this and feels it is safe.

There are many other interesting facts, as well.

In the US, the federal Food and Drug Administration regulates bottled water production as a food product. I have not made a comparison of FDA regs versus EPA's drinking water regs, so I can't state an opinion as to which is more stringent. As other posters have stated, the vast majority of US water suppliers do a very good job with maintaining compliance with EPA standards. I personally refill a bottle from my local public water supplier. As a side note, most people drink bottled water as a convenience, and not as a risk-avoidance technique.

I find myself amused that a popular brand of bottled water is "Deer Park".

I've been to Deer Park (TX) which is in the middle of refinery row. I ain't drinkin' Nothin' there!

I have not seen Deer Park water but know the Houston Ship Channel well. Some of the spring water that I buy comes from the Jasper, TX area. This too seems curious. I have spring water from Arkansas too. I prefer the spring water from Utopia - the south end of the Central Texas Hill Country. No industry exists in the Utopia area; but agriculture nearby could polute the ground water.

Deer Park refers to a vacation resort in the Appalachian Mountains of Wsstern Maryland, not texas.

aitch2oh, if you want to compare the FDA standards to the EPA standards, here is the link that has a side by side comparison:

I like carbonated water if not beer in countries where I don't trust the water for myself. It is amazing how you can shove a cap on a bottle and it looks unopened. While I appreciate stanier's comment on stressing the body, after 12 hours I was ready to have control back and feel I have stressed it enough. Plus I would rather risk my health for the food.

This is a great post. Here is my 2 cents:

-I don't trust TAP water. EPA regulations are designed to allow the treatment we currently have and slowly add tighter regulations, otherwise many municipal water systems would be shutdown, especially in rural areas. Many rural water have some pretty nasty water that can give you cancer and passes current EPA standards.

-Reverse Osmosis does not make pure water. Small non polar molecules can pass through.

-Distillation does not make pure water. Substances with similar boiling points to water will not be removed.

-I try and drink bottled water. If you read the bottle, it tells you how it is processed. Microfiltration does not remove and dissolved materials, just solids. Carbon filtration removes organic contaminants, reverse osmosis removes all ions, and ozonation oxidizes everything. I like RO water with added minerals the best. I think it tastes good.

-Some municipal systems have very good quality water and some don't. Probably the best thing to do is get your water from a variety of sources. This way you won't be continuously exposing yourself to water with contaminants that build up in your body over time. Pretty much all municipal and bottled water is pretty safe from bacteria and virus.
