What are these new files in Pack & Go?

What are the new addtional files that were created with this prefix ~$ ? Do I need them? Can I set-up SW so they are not created? I get thses files using the Pack & Go in SW 2008.

They are not new. They have always existed for every document opened in SW. They are temporary and should be automatically deleted when the document is closed.

If no SW documents are open, they can be deleted without ill effect.
