I recently started a new job and we are running solid edge for the first time on a network that only had AutoCAD before. My previous company had SE, but I don't remember having this problem.

When I first start my machine things are going great. But as I work I notice that things seem to slow down. It takes longer to go update parts and things like that.

Eventually I get an error that the file I am looking for can't be found. I exit SE and try again, but it's still the same. This usually happens with a draft first, and I can't open the assembly or any of the individual parts. I restart my machine and then it's fine, for a while.

Does this sound like a set-up issue with my machine running SE, or could this be a network issue that I should let the IT guys figure out.

What are your computer & network specs?
How much VM do you have allocated?
What version of SE & Patch are you using?

I'm running an HP workstation - XW4100 with 2g of ram and 80g hard drive.

I'm running Windows 2000 profesional.

I have 4092meg of VM.

I'm running SE version 14. It's a demo version that our reseller gave us to get started with while our purchasing people set things up.

I don't know anything about the network we are using.

I hope this helps.

Hmmm ... I used to use an HP workstation with NT4 to run CoCreate's Solid Designer & it had the same slowdown problem ... we didn't lose files though, it just crashed ... we fixed it by upping the VM, but you are already "upped", so other than increasing it further, I don't know what to suggest.

It doesn't sound like a network problem ... if it was, I think the problem would be there from the start. It wouldn't hurt to get your IT guys involved though.

Have you loaded whatever SE14 patches exist?
Does the graphics card have a specific setting for SE?

Perhaps the problem is not within Solid Edge, but something else. After the slowdown becomes noticable, leave SE idle and open the Task Manager, click on Processes, and see whether something is using up your CPU capacity.

Suspect NETWORK problems. We've had this problem on ocasion and it always came down to having our IT guys tinker with the settings and patches for the network. Our problems normally started each time that we upgraded the network. In some cases when a file was closed, the network would not release the file to be reopened. The problem was usually associated when opening and closing a file several times. This was especially true when trying to open and close assembly files from the draft document. We'd be able to edit once, maybe twice, then never again. Shutting down the workstaion and unplugging the power from the computer usually reset the connection to the network and we could work again for a little while. We'd see error messages as read only file, can't save, someone else is using the file, can only open in read only, See your IT guy. I'm willing to bet that if your files are save locally on your computer that the problem goes away.
