Weldolet 1

What is the minimum thickness of weld to attach a weldolet to the run pipe. In this instance the run pipe is 30" x 17.5mm wt and the weldolet 16"NB x 12.7 wt.
One theory appears to be that the thickness of the weld should be min twice the run pipe thickness or 35.0mm. The various piping, pipeline and vessel codes seem vague on how branch reinforcement should be considered with respect to attachment weld thickness for this type of fitting.

Two Suggestions:

1. Re-post your question in one of the Engineering Codes and Standards forums. You'll get a wider and more knowledgeable audience.


2. Making a fillet weld twice the wall thickness would concern me due to overheating and burn-through. From a strength standpiont, I can't see it taking more than the w.t. of the base metal.
