How galvanization is going to be affected by welding. I am aware that galvanization needs to be removed before welding, and then it can be restored - what is the lifetime of restored area? Has anybody have any experience with welding Nelson studs to galvanized beams?

Here is an example, tested by bending.
Typically the explosive nature of stud welding removes enough zinc to produce a good weld. Increase the weld time and/or amperage may be required.

If you have to make a repair use SMAW and 6010 electrode. (The rutile flusx improves the weld.)

LKK -- The American Galvanizers Association ("AGA") has two publications that you'd find useful: Welding & Hot-Dip Galvanizing, and the Inspection of Products Hot-Dip Galvanized After Fabrication, Including A New Section on Touch-up & Repair. You may request complimentary copies from the AGA, 800-468-7732, or you may download them from the AGA Web site, We're also available to answer any other questions you may have regarding hot-dip galvanizing after fabrication (not galvanized sheet/strip products).

watch out for zinc oxide poisoning!
