Welding Strength of Rebar Welded to HSS

Hi,

Does anyone know if there is an equation to check the shear strength of a weld that is connecting a rebar with HSS Post ?

Sure -- you'll need a special weld procedure (given standard rebar), but once it's done right, a weld is a weld (Whoa, that's a dangerous phrase right there!).

The question becomes -- what kind of weld do you have? And what is the weld orientation between the parts?

Lomarandil is right about the type of bar. Use ASTM A706. Assuming you've got that, you've either got a fillet weld or a flare-bevel groove weld depending how your bars are oriented (perpendicular or parallel to the HSS respectively). You can find the strength of each type of weld in the AISC manual Chapter J (Table J2.5 in the 14th edition). If the weld is strong enough, you also need to check that the base metal can develop the weld. The easiest way is to set the rupture strength of the base metal equal to the weld strength and solve for the required thickness or area of the base metal (AISC manual equations 9-2 and 9-3 give a good example of how to do this). A good guide for this type of thing is also found in the PCI Design Handbook. They have loads of details and tables for welding rebar in there (Figure 6.7.3.1 in the 6th Edition). Hope this helps.
 
Second the recommendation of the PCI Design Handbook; very concise reference for welding rebar. If you don't have a PCI manual in the office you can get a free PDF copy of the Canadian CPCI manual which has very similar recommendations and information.
