Any reference on this that you can recommend. Or you can just say what are the dos and don'ts.

I have an existing steel beam, rusting and have holes due to rust. It's currently under load.

I'm not looking for calculation reference.

Can i weld on existing rusting beam or should it have it cleaned first until all rust are removed, what if this is not possible? How much reduction in strength happens during welding? Do I always need to shore the beam 1st before welding or depends how much stress it's currently under? I'm looking for recommendation/reference for these type of questions.

I usually include some type of note about removing rust from steel prior to welding, etc. If it's so rusted that you cannot get it off, time for some new steel.

As far as strength reduction goes.....in this thread I give a reference on that.....and there is some discussion:

Shoring is always a great approach (if possible).
