Dear Colleagues,

I would to know how to weld a square bar made of SM45C (equiv. to ASTM A29-1045). What are the filler (TIG) or electrodes (SMAW) to be used if we will conduct repair welding? What is the required preheat temperature and if required PWHT?

Thank you.

For such an application, I'd use regular 7018 rods or 70S-6 wire (with run-on/off tabs), preheat according to EN1011-2 (depending on thickness of the pieces), weld everything but the last layer, use a low hardfacing rod for the last (two? three?) layers, and let it cool slowly.

Ofcourse, without knowing the complete situation (I assume the bar is continuously supported), it's hard to give a definitive suggestion, but the above should show you the general direction.

Make sure you perform surface NDT after welding, like wet fluorescent MT, to ensure the integrity of the weld repair.

Why are you intending to weld on something without a qualified WPS which would give you all the information you have requested ?
Remember, if this weld fails and the crane falls down what will you say to the prosecuting lawyer in court - I got told it was OK on an internet forum !

Agree with DekDee, you need to qualify a welding procedure for this repair. Suggest to review the Lincoln Wearshield MI electrode for the welding repair with preheating. The welded area should be verified for the hardness.
