I've read in a welding book that there is a maximum distance from the weld (butt weld) for the heat affected zone(HAZ) but I can't recall where. For instance on a half inch thick plate the heat affected zone is one eight of an inch (from Metals and How to Weld Them, Lincoln Foundation). Is there a base metal thickness where the heat affected zone distance reaches a maximum from the weld? Say after 1 inch thick plate the HAZ goes to 1/2 inch and is still 1/2 inch for 1/1/2 plate?
