Fellow experts,

I am working on a security gate which will have an extruded rail beam acting as the track rolling on bearings and also supporting the fencing.

We will need to weld the fence (2 x 2 aluminum tube) to the rail beam. Is there any literature out there (free of course) that I can read up to verify the welding procedures to minimize deformation (i.e. temperatures, welding materials, etc.) The tubes are .125" TK and the top of the rail beam is 0.25" TK.

Thanks.

Yes, see below. You need to know that with welding on 6XXX series aluminum alloys these are heat treatable and the base material adjacent to the weld region will loose strength. In this case, it probably will not make a difference, however, you should be aware.

The Alcotec site is decent and if you go to the knowledge center under the education tab there is technical information related to welding of aluminum alloys.

Thanks a million metengr, the alcotec site is super informative and what I was gunning for.
