In the above welding detail (welding of nipple to shell), it is mentioned tw shall not be less than 6mm and 1.5mm gap between end of nipple and weld groove is recommended?

Does this mean that, i cannot use the welding detail for sizes less than 6mm? or if my nipple size is less than 6mm which detail should i follow?

What is the requirement of 1.5mm gap in the welding detail? What are the tolerances on that?

". . .sizes less than 6mm?" Correct welds cannot be tiny.

"What is the requirement of 1.5mm gap in the welding detail?" This is to reliable allow the welder to achieve full root penetration, giving a Full-Penn weld.

This is Boiler Code and the boiler connections are required to be robust; no tiny welds nor any welds lacking complete penetration allowed.
