I am working on a project where we wish to detail 58' of 3"x3"x1/4" A36 steel plate welded to 8 stainless steel tube columns. I am not sure what grade the stainless steel will be because it will be part of a propreitary sunshade system that has not yet been selected. The architect has ruled out bolted connections for aesthetic reasons.

My question is: Are there any issues or concerns associated with welding these two materials together? If so, would it be preferable or more economical to simply specify a stainless steel plate welded to the stainless steel columns?

Normally you would use 309 SS for welding CS to SS.

If you can come back with more details and if possible the type stainless with the welding procedure you will use.

I thing using SST flat bar would be a better detail.
