Need some clarification regarding welder testing to corrosion resistant overlay. We are going to be testing welders to ASME Sec IX using the FCAW process. WPS we are testing to is a multi layer E309LT-1 (F6) first layer & E312T-1 (F6) second layer on SA516-70 base material. Our client is requesting us to test the welders on SA516-70 with a single layer of E309LT-1 client is adamant this is all that's required. I have reviewed ASME Sec IX & cant find an argument. Please note welders will be applying both consumables during the project. Thanks in advance.

GemmellG,
See below.
My interpretation is the same as the clients.
Qualify with one layer of F6 and you can then add as many further layers of F6 as required in production (in accordance with WPS)

QW 381.1
(c) The essential variables of QW-350 and QW-360
shall apply for welders and welding operators, respectively,
except there is no limit on the maximum thickness
of corrosion‐resistant overlay that may be applied in production.
