My welder has welded a test coupon of 1/2" OD with 5.0 mm thickness with GTAW process in 1G position, same welder has also welded a 6" OD coupon with 10.97 mm thickness in 1G position with GTAW process. He has passed RT test as required by ASME sec IX.
So can the same welder be used to weld a 48 mm OD pipe in 1G position for 15 mm thickness with GTAW process?

a quick reply is highly appreciated.

I'm not sure why you mixed units of measurement, but, if I'm understanding correctly, your welder has qualified for groove welds on 1/2" and 6" OD pipes max wall 11 mm nom. So the answer is yes provided all other essential variables are maintained as applicable. See QW 356 for those.
His qualified range is 1/2" OD thru max dia unlimited, with wall thickness 22 mm max.

Weldtek,
Unless Lahane has made a typo a single 1/2" coupon is not sufficient to satisfy QW 302.2.
He would need 3 x 1/2" coupons to satisfy this clause.
So he cannot weld the 48 mm pipe as his qualification is minimum 73 mm (2 7/8")OD,

lahane,
I made the assumption that the welder had been qualified on 1/2" dia. per Sec IX rules.

i missed to write, welder has welded 3 coupons of 1/2" OD & is qualified per ASME SEC IX.
So i guess he can weld 48 mm OD.

Yes Lahane, he is good to go.
Regards,
Kiwi
