A 242 is a specification for high strength low alloy steel shapes. This material can be welded using most common arc welding processes; SMAW, FCAW, GTAW, SAW. What else do you need to know?

Metengr,
Thanks for your response!considering that it's atmospheric corrosion-resistant, is there a particular electrod required?

Use E8018W, E8018-B2 or E7018-B2L type filler to match atmospheric corrosion resistance.

Those B types are no good for fatigue applications; they're not Charpy-tested. What's the application?

Basically, what you want is that which is listed in AWS D1.1 Table 3.3 or D1.5 Table 4.3.

"On single pass welds, mild steel electrodes are commonly used. There is usually enough pickup from the base metal to obtain a good color match.

On multiple pass welds, low-alloy electrodes are commonly used to obtain a good color match and similar corrosion resistance. The electrodes commonly specified include those with the suffixes -C1, -C2, and -C3. "
