Experts,

Does ASME Sec1 or Asme B31.1 limit the number of times a defective weld can be repaired? We have P5A material in the super heater system where some welds were repaired twice...

Good question. I was asked similar question recently.

How many times can you cut out a weld and re-weld. e.g replace a weld neck flange?

How much of the weld and base metal needs to be removed each time?

These issues are usually dealt with in project specifications - I don't think you will find in any codes.
Metengr / Weldstan are more familiar with the two codes quoted so they may be able to assist,
Cheers,
Shane

There is no ASME I or B31.1 Code requirements limiting number of repairs. A number of Owners/Engineers do limit localized repairs to two and consider full cut outs to be new welds. Localized repairs can be more detrimental to service life than if the workmanship defect was left in place.
