Hi,
I have two steel beams that will be joined in a T-shaped geometry. I have completed the load analysis, but I have little experience is in the appropriate method for joining of these memebers. I have a fairly good reference text for designing a bolted connection, but I am largly ignorant when it comes to desiging a welded connection. To envision loading, imagine the singular lower portion of the T to be 10" and cantileverd out in space. The upper portion of the T is 40" and will have an equal load pulling down on each end, so I will need to transfer the shear and moment loads though the connection. We are talking about a large structure carrying around 2.5 tons on each arm of the T.

Could someone offer some advice and perhaps point me to a good reference for understanding the proper design considerations of welded and/or bolted joints?
Thanks!

If you want to learn about welded connections, start with Omer Blodgett's book "Design of welded structures" or "Design of Weldments". You can get them off of the Lincoln Electric website, and they are very economical.

Thanks guys!
I will check out the references listed!
