We need to upgrade to SW 2004 or 2005 and are trying to do it on the cheap -- but legitimately. We're not interested in a bootleg copy, but are looking for a real uninstalled (or maybe installed and then removed) copy that's not needed by it's original purchaser. Has anyone got any suggestions as to where we might find such an animal?

I think the licence agreement states that you cannnot sell solidworks

As 112275 said, SW won't support such a sale because of license violation. That also means you will get no support in the form of updates or service packs, since the license won't be honored.

Some VARs will run programs from time to time that will allow a less expensive purchase (such as turning in a license of an AutoDesk product, etc), but other than that, you'd have to purchase a full version like everyone else.

Thanks for the replies! With your help i finnaly got everything up and running.

What happens to the licenses of a company that is sold. Do the new owners loose them?

No, the Licences do transfer, but you need to let your VAR know, and there is some paperwork to do. It's more of a formallity. I had to do this with 13 licenses of various types. My VAR made it easy though.

One note though, never buy SW to a specific Job. My last company used the money from a job to purchase a copy of SW, and technically SW was the customers copy, but the engineer who did it, didn't get that! Oops.
