I have an existing 48' diameter water storage tank. The roof (end cap) is an ASME type shaped roof. What is the equation or code that dictates the shape of the "end cap"?

You can make the ends of the vessel any shape that you desire. An elliptical shape is the most economical in terms of materials and the elliptical end is probably the most common.

Pressure vessels are designed in accordance with ASME boiler Pressure Vessel Code Section 8
