What is the correct way to calculate the quantity?
 
glance over to the next student's test paper?
 
I can't top that answer, but if you want some details about what he's writing, look at ASTM D1142. It is not available for free, but I think I paid less than $100 for my copy.

ASHRAE has the equations, I forget which volume.
