Water and Sewer Inventory 1

I'm working on a project where I need to, more or less, conduct an inventory of the water and sewer piping. I need to take the length, grade, type, and orientation of each pipe section. The gravity sewer and forcemain lines will be easier because I can take sections between manholes and lift stations. The water lines on the other hand have a more complex routing system. I was wondering if anyone knew of an efficient system to inventory this water and sewer system, and possibly an example. Thanks, One..

start with your as-built plans for the water system. Create a map (we call them quarter section maps) which shows the street layout and the facilities. Take the maps out to the field and verify existence and location of valves and hydrants if possible. If you dont have the as-builts, then you may have to hire a utility locating company to designate the lines and then perform a survey. A GPS system can be used to collect the data and integrated with a GIS to create the map / database.

I have the as-builts for the system, and I think I'm going to isolate each loop in the water system and work from there

Some of the locating equipment available will also give fairly accurate depths of water mains. You can also measure down to the tops of the gate valves where they are accessible. How many miles of pipe are involved?
