We have to design the foundation for Warm lime softerner tank of 27m diameter, height 7m. At the center of the tank there is sludge cone of 5m diameter of 1.6m depth. The previous project have similar tank but no record of design brief or calculation has been archived. Their design with concrete ring wall (800x1500mm) at the circumference and 250mm thick concrete slab on the gravel sub-base (1100 mm thick, 80mm minus crushed gravel, factored allowable clay bearing capacity under gravel is 150kPa.
Also the thing is the concrete ring wall is seperate from concrete slab. To my limited knowledge in foundation engineering, if the concrete slab is independent from the ringwall, why not put the tank directly on the gravel pad for more flexible (i.e. more uniform stress distribution under tank)? Any comment or experience on this kind of foundation?
