Von Mises Stress

Hi All,

I am quite new in the FEA. I would like to know what is the Von Mises stress and how is it used to predict failure?
What kind of failure is this, and what failure theory is being used?
What are the advantages/disadvantages and limitations of this theory?

Von Mises failure theory is widely accepted for ductile material such as steel it works off of yield not ultimate tensile strength.

It is also a combined stress theory taking into account the principle stresses and shear. Don't recall the formula off the top of my head, but efunda should give it to you as should the course notes from MIT's open course information.

Shearing stresses on the planes on which principal stresses SIGMAmax and SIGMAmin occur are always zero, regardless of the values of SIGMAx, SIGMAy and TIxy.
