I am analyzing a nozzle by determining the Von Mises effective stress. From a piping analysis program, I have been provided with Axial, Bending, Torsional, and Hoop Stresses. My plan was to determine the uniaxial tensile stresses from the bending and torsional stresses using Von Mises and by treating the nozzle as a two dimensional stress state. I would then add the axial stress to come up with the overall axial stress acting on the nozzle. Does this sound like the correct approach? Even though the hoop stresses do not act in the axial direction of the nozzles, do they need to considered? Thanks for any input.
