How many yards of fill can a typical dumptruck hold? Can't you use about 3 yds/truck for purposes of estimating?

3 yards is very little. Many small dump trucks with a single rear axle hold 5 CY. Most 10 wheel dump trucks are considered to hold 10 CY of dirt. Tri-axle dump trucks can have a GVW of about 80,000# (including the truck weight).

Thanks! What is a typical ESAL value for a single-axle dumptruck that can carry 5 CY? How about an ESAL value for the large tri-axle dumptrucks that can carry 10 CY?

Also, I was just curious about what kind of ESAL value a typical concrete truck would have.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What are you trying to do? If you are designing for truck loads, you may need to design for a certain AASHTO truck load with prescribed axle loads and spacings.

I'm supplying an estimate of ESALs to the geotechnical engineer so he can recommend a cross-section design for a construction road. We are designing an aggregate construction road that will be used to build a large warehouse on a power plant facility. After construction is complete, the road will not be used much.

Anyway, I just need a rough estimate of ESALs. I don't need exact values for the trucks because it's all just a rough guess while trying to be very conservative.

I'm just looking for typical values of dumptrucks used to haul cut/fill material on regular construction projects. I'm looking for a ballpark number of ESALs erroring on the conservative side.

Is 3 ESALs reasonable for a dumptruck that will haul 5 CY? Is it too conservative?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Contractors rarely use dump trucks that small (5 CY), especially to build a large warehouse at a power plant. I would probably design for at least AASHTO HS20-44 truck traffic. This truck has 3 axles with 14' between the axles. The front axle load is 8,000# and the two other axle loads are 32,000# each. You probably should check with the road or warehouse owner to see what design loads they expect on the completed road. Contractor loads could be permit loads much heavier than HS20-44 but they would be infrequent, except for dump trucks.

A typical truck is rated at 10 cy capacity. The over the road truck has a weight limit of 40,000 lbs of payload.

The standard truck trailer has the capacity to carry much more than 10 cy's but is limited by the DOT 40,000 lbs payload limit.

If you are only doing off road construction, your carrying capacity will be higher than an over the road hauling truck. Suggest you talk to a contractor experienced in that work.

Have to agree strongly with earlier post. Don't waste time trying to calculate, call the local quarries and find out the real answer to the truck/weight question. Do not rely on DOT restrictions.

Alright, one last question on this.

Considering the truck HS20-44 truck that PEinc mentions (3 axles spaced 14' apart at 8k, 32k, 32k) what is a general value for the ESAL?

I'm assuming general conditions of SN=3, pt=2.5. Can anybody help me out with what a general ballpark value for the ESAL will be for this truck? Anything?

My reference doesn't have an ESAL equation and the one that I've seen looks tremendously complicated. Any help on this one would be much appreciated.
