We have a project to install aluminum piping for Breathing Air application in our plant. I just wondering if Victaulic connections can be used on BA piping. Is there any restriction using this type of connections with respect to applicalbe codes?
The piping will be installed indoors; design pressure 150 psig, D. Temp: 150 degF, Operating Pressure 90 psig & O. Temp. 80 degF. Intention is to use Al for piping =>4NPS and Copper/CS for <3NPS.
Appreciate your thoughts/inputs

Most of these systems are constructed of stainless steel piping. Stainless steel is selected over carbon steel to prevent the possibility of corrosion.

You will have to confirm the code requirements in the locale that you are working in. Don't believe that there is a specific code that covers Victaulic in this application. You may want to contact Victaulic.

Here is a discussion of some other issues:

Refer to the typical specification for such a system.

I agree. Stainless steel or Monel come to mind to me for breathing air systems.

I seem to recall the use of Monel on pure oxygen systems at points of impingement due to adiabatic compression and risk of fire.

If you use stainless steel (you can with Victaulic) and you use the correct lubricants when installing the Victaulic couplings, you should be fine- of course following the cleaning rules and other rules required for breathing air.

racookpe1978 has a very important question, therefore, it should be answered. If it is breathing oxygen, my initial instinct would be to double check on the suitability of Al piping.

Both Transair and Kaeser make aluminum piping suitable for OSHA Grade D breathable air.

people use SS when they have long runs because it requires so much less support than Al.
But for handling it is hard to beat Al. For clean air either is fine, just order it that way and it will come cleaned.
