Guys,

What is the difference between a vibration isolator and a vibration damper. Any specific example.

I have'nt had a lot of experience with vibrations of any great magnitude, but I did design a platform holding large (20000cfm) exhaust fans. The fan mounting bases came with springs which dampened/isolated the fan vibration from the platform.

I would say that it is a matter of terminology whether you dampen or isolate the vibration.

if you're damping the vibration, you're dissipating the vibratory energy. If you're isolating the vibration, you're preventing the vibration from being communicated from one part of a structure to another. Isolators will often have some inherent damping (like rubber mounting feet), but in most cases the damping actually worsens their ability to isolate, by increasing the transmitted vibratory force.
