There is a new subdivision being developed next to an existing railway line in northern Ontario Canada. It is a main line (single track) for a regional railway with several freight and passenger trains per day.
The railway has insisted that homes constructed in the subdivision be equipped with:
- mandatory air conditioning
- vibration dampening foundation with a natural frequency less than 12 Hz
- all outdoor balconies and decks be enclosed, not open
I was wondering if this is common practice in the industry and if there are any reference documents pertaining to this area (i.e. residential construction in proximity to railway tracks; vibration dampening of home foundations).
Could you offer some advice to home designers faced with these requirements?
