Vertical Rod from Joist Tie to Top Chord 1

Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone familiar with OWSJ's from the 60's can comment on this (see attached photo). The tie joists at a building we're working on all have a vertical rod from the bottom chord tie to the top chord. Ideally we could remove this rod but there is some debate as to its function. Some ideas:
- Stabilization during transport/install
- Transfer hanging loads from tie to top chord
- Stabilization of top or bottom chord due to unsupported lengths

It appears to me that the tie joist bottom chord is detailed to be able to slip against that clip angle in the direction of the bottom chord. Is that accurate? If so, then I suspect the rod was just an attempt to improve the condition for erection stability and I'd be inclined to not worry about removing it.

Hi KootK, I received more photos and unfortunately it looks like the tie joist is fully welded to the clip angle, so there would be no slip at this joint. I'm 99% sure I can remove this rod but I don't know for sure.

I agree. Whatever the original intent of the rod was, it's hard to imagine that it's doing much now.
